Debe and I enjoyed Mamma Mia this past weekend. It was fantastic and even better watching Deidre giggle and fall in love with the music. For those not in the know, Mamma Mia is originially a very successful Musical put to the music of Abba. Here are a few clips to enjoy.
Dominic and I had a nice date night in last night. He picked me up early from work and we decided to ride around and look at a few houses... found one we LOVED only to discover it was just bought. that seriously sucks. the other one I liked because it was "pretty" has foundational problems and wasn't in the "best" neighborhood. ah well, it will happen eventually.
We rode into Springfield with our hearts downtrodden and decided to rent a movie or two - we usually have to get two because our tastes differ greatly in what titles a movie good. Case in point, Dominic decided on Revolver - a Guy Ritchie flix and I chose Penelope - a Christina Ricci and James Macavoy one.
We also grabbed some bbq for dom and yummy veggies for me to completely round out our evening.
Started with Revolver which started really great, but honestly could have been finished in an hour. And that's not an opinion just coming from me. The movie was a tad over 100 minutes and we felt we had been watching it for freaking ever. And I like Guy Ritchie stuff for the most part. sigh
Penelope was a surprising find in the fact that both Dom and I enjoyed it. Really sweet little movie with a good moral and very clean come to think of it. I may have to get that one for the niece.... It was nice to see Ricci play a character with life and personality and of corse Macavoy is both nice to look at and displays some serious chops.
All in all, it was a great date night and I'm glad we were able to chill out and forget about house hunting for 4 hours... sigh....
Or How I spent St. Patricks Day.....
Dom and I had been going rounds on what to do for St. Paddy's day, or more namely to go out or not. There was going to be an outside thing down on 2nd and I kinda wanted to go, but I didn't want to pay for parking and get in all that mess. So we finally settled on going to a restaurant in Springfield that was serving up corned beef, boiled potato's, and cabbage (yum!) , I will give you more on the place later. Afterwards we braved the wal-mart for some needed nessesities. I hate that place and from here on out refuse to go if I can help it. I don't think it's cheaper and I would rather spend my money at a place where they act like they want me there. But we really needed trash bags and paper towels and all that kind of stuff. (sigh) Then we went to Hollywood video and grabbed a few movies and a video game for Dom's days off this week.
We rented "No Country for Old Men" and "Dan in Real Life" needless to say, they were vastly different movies. HaHaHa.
"No Country for Old Men" reminded me why I appreciate Tommy Lee Jones, as always he plays the part well and somehow with grace. Javier Bardem scared the crap out of me, he was evil without a reason which is worse, I can see why he won the Oscar for his role, the way his character enveloped him was nothing short of unsettling and incredible. The movie pace was slow, but understandably, it had a story to weave and if it had been just thrown out there, it wouldn't have been as well told as it was. If you can stand a movie that is not scared to show blood and guns then I recommend you check it out, just realize that you need to watch it.
"Dan in Real Life" was our next choice. Totally different movie, like on a different plane movie. It was sweet and cute. Steve Carrel is a widowed father of three girls who also happens to be a columnist on parenting. He is far from perfect and he daughters are definetly not angels nor hellions. I think Steve Carrel is naturally funny in awkward situations and this time he didn't let down either. I recommend this movie if you are looking for something lighter and sweeter. Diane Weist is as always great to watch and Juilet Binoch was a surprising delight in the movie. It was nice to see her in lighter fare.
So there was my St. Patricks day in a few paragraphs, it was nice and fun... perhaps next year we will find some step dancers to watch.
Last night I finished watching Across the Universe. I really enjoyed it. Parts of the movie reminded me of the old school musical and definitely parts of it were like nothing I had ever seen before. The movie follows Jude (from Liverpool) and Lucy (American girl next door) as they meet and then live in New York during the Vietnam era and what progresses as a part of that. There is alot more to the film than that... but then again I wouldn't want to give it away. The story is told primarily through Beatles music, I really enjoyed the creativity of the use there. Max was the surprising Gem of a character as Lucy's brother who has his time in Vietnam. Definitely worth the rental. And without a doubt Classic Julie Taymor (the genius of Broadways Lion King) If I were to view it again however, I would probably skip past the middle section. Even though it has the revered cameo of Bono I felt it didn't add or subtract from the storyline. I think it was just a reason and excuse to touch on drug use and psychedelic effects. But that is just my opinion...
